3 Generations of Shuman Produce

Headquartered in the center of the Vidalia® growing region in southeast Georgia, family-owned Shuman Produce has been in the sweet onion industry for more than 30 years. The legacy began in the mid-1980s with a small family farm in Reidsville, GA.

After gradating from college in 1994, John was working in the family Vidalia sweet onion business when his father, Buck Shuman, announced that economic hardship was forcing him out of the business. John was devastated since he always dreamed of running the family business. With absolutely no resources but all the determination in the world, John made the choice to risk it all and do what he loved most by continuing the family tradition.

Today, Shuman Produce is recognized throughout the industry as a leading year-round grower and shipper of sweet onions. Vidalia sweet onions have always been their benchmark, but their availability is seasonal (mid-April to late August). To provide the best quality onions throughout the year, Shuman Produce has growing ventures in Texas, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Peru, Chile and Mexico.

To John Shuman, it’s always been about more than just onions. It’s about growing a family, a business, a culture of giving back and a product that we’re proud to share. This is what has kept their family of farms together through three generations.

Besides its focus on providing a great product, Shuman Produce also believes in giving back in the communities where RealSweet onions are grown and sold. In 2002, the company founded Produce for Kids® (PFK) which raises funds for children’s charities and helps families eat healthier. Since its inception, the PFK program has raised more than $5.5 million to benefit kids.
